This thesis discusses the structuring of electronic information by means of a concept hierarchy. The information to be structured is scientific information of a unifying kind, as traditionally found in paper handbooks. The purpose of the concept hierarchy is to serve as an easy to use means of navigation through the electronic information. We first describe the structure we impose on such a concept hierarchy, the concept hierarchy we built so far, and the text material used for this purpose. Since the construction and maintenance of a concept hierarchy is very labor intensive, we would like to automate it as much as possible. Thereforce, we discuss methods found in literature to automatically generate concept hierarchies on the basis of a collection of texts. We also address the automatic generation of links from the concept hierarchy to the scientific information. We discuss several approaches from literature, and our own experiments using information retrieval techniques. From those experiments, we conclude that it is not possible to fully automate the linking, but that it is possible to construct tools to support the editor of the hierarchy with this task. Finally, we summarize the ideas presented in this thesis, and describe the next steps and the expected output of the L3 project.
