Abstract

Many theories of presupposition fail to account for the pragmatic nature
of presuppositional justification. An alternative account will be presented
in which accommodation is essentially nonstructural: the material
to be accommodated cannot be predicted purely by consideration of the
form of the utterance, but instead makes essential use of worldknowledge
and commonsense reasoning. The account will essentially consist of the
extension of (a reformulated version of) the Context Change Potential
(CCP) model due to Heim, Karttunen and Stalnaker, with a pragmatic module.
