Abstract

The goal of this master thesis was to explore possible interactions between Hintikka's Interrogative Model of Inquiry (IMI) and Dynamic Epistemic Logics (DELs).
The IMI is a model of inquiry which represents inquiry as an information-seeking process by means of asking questions and drawing inferences. This model provides thereby a working framework to investigate the notion of inquiry within the general program of logical dynamics, linking the study of inquiry with two recent trends in dynamic logics: dynamic logics of questions and dynamic logics of inferences.
In this master thesis, we have chosen to explore three specific research directions within this general project.

The first one was concerned with the development of a formalization of the IMI under the form of a dynamic logic of questions and inferences. The main idea was to represent questions and inferences as actions modifying the informational state of the inquiring agent.

The second one was concerned with the investigation of the so-called strategic aspects of inquiry using works from the semantics of questions and answers in natural language, in particular the works of Groenendijk, Stokhof and van Rooij. We suggested that defining measures of epistemic value for questions, such as the notions of informativity and relevance, can directly contribute to our understanding of questioning strategies.

The third one was concerned with the investigation of the notion of inquiry plan. Within the IMI, this issue is treated under the informal idea of decomposition of questions: the inquiring agent produces an inquiry plan by decomposing a big (principal) question into a number of small (operational) questions. In this master thesis, we have approached the investigation of inquiry plans by proposing several definitions aiming to formally capture the informal idea of decomposition of questions.
