Abstract
In this research, we focus on different types of polar questions, in
particular the difference between positive polar questions and
negative polar questions with high and low negation. We propose a
theoretical framework and empirically test some of the predictions of
the framework, focusing on the differences in contexts in which
different polar question types are licensed. A context is taken to be
a combination of speaker belief and contextual evidence. It is shown
that positive polar questions and the different types of negative
polar questions indeed differ from each other in terms of the contexts
in which they occur. Accordingly, the results are formalized in the
framework of inquisitive semantics, resulting in an analysis where
polar questions coincide with respect to their informative and
inquisitive content, but differ from each other in terms of
highlighted possibilities and felicity conditions.
